Michigan Auto Insurance No-Fault Reform Law Generates Savings
Governor Gretchen Whitmer recently announced that the state’s 2019 insurance reform legislation, which first took effect on July 1, 2020, is delivering savings for auto insurance policyholders.
Specifically, the Governor identified the following benefits for Michigan drivers:
More than 202,000 previously uninsured drivers took advantage of the law’s amnesty period to buy auto insurance without paying a penalty.
The auto insurance market has expanded with the addition of 46 new insurance companies or affiliates being authorized to enter Michigan’s market.
Several new PIP coverage options, including an opt-out for Medicare participants, are helping drivers save money on auto insurance.
The newly established the Fraud Investigation Unit within the Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services (DIFS) is working to address insurance and financial fraud concerns.
The law is not without controversy. Some consumer advocates argue that Michiganders who receive medical benefits from their auto no-fault policies may experience cutbacks in the level of care available to them.
